7 (a) h = √(17^2-8^2) = √(289-64) = √225 =15 (b) the area of triangle ABC =16*15/2 =120 cm^2 8 Since 17^2=8^2+15^2 BC^2=AB^2+AC^2 So triangle ABC is a right-angled triangle angle A is a right angle the area of triangle ABC =8*15/2 =60 cm^2 9 (a) p=√(12^2+4^2) = √(144+16) = √160 =12.6 (correct to 3 significant figures) q=√(p^2+3^2) = √(160+9) = √169 =13 10 (a) x =√10^2+6^2) = √(100+36) = √136 =11.7 (correct to 3 significant figures) y =√x^2-8^2) = √(136-64) = √72 =8.49 (correct to 3 significant figures)
